New Era for Indian Railways: “Namo Green Rail” Ignites Hydrogen Revolution!

Namo Green Rail

Varanasi, October 16, 2025 – A new chapter in India’s sustainable future was dramatically unveiled today as Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the nation’s first hydrogen-powered train in Varanasi. Dubbed the “Namo Green Rail,” this pioneering locomotive, developed under the ambitious “Make in India” program, represents a monumental leap towards decarbonizing the railway sector and achieving the country’s net-zero emissions target by 2030.

The magnificent Namo Green Rail is not just any train; it boasts an indigenously developed 1,200 horsepower engine, making it reportedly the most powerful hydrogen locomotive of its kind globally, far outstripping the typical 500-600 horsepower of similar international models. With the capacity to carry over 2,600 passengers at exhilarating speeds of up to 110 km/h, it promises not only green travel but also efficient transit. Its operation relies entirely on advanced fuel cells, producing only water vapor as a byproduct, effectively eliminating carbon emissions and significantly reducing noise pollution.

This groundbreaking project is a cornerstone of the “Hydrogen for Heritage” initiative, which envisions deploying 35 hydrogen trains across India’s iconic heritage and scenic hill routes. Following successful trial runs earlier this year, the initial pilot route for the Namo Green Rail is set to be the Jind-Sonepat line in Haryana. With an estimated project cost of approximately ₹136 crore, covering both the conversion of existing diesel units and the establishment of dedicated hydrogen fueling infrastructure, the Namo Green Rail is poised to lead India into a cleaner, greener railway era!
